What is the best way to clean a washing machine?
Clean the Drum and Interior
For a top-loading machine, fill it with hot water and add either two cups of white vinegar or a commercial washing machine cleaner. Let it agitate for a few minutes, then pause the cycle and let it sit for an hour before completing the cycle. For a front-loader, pour the vinegar or cleaner into the detergent dispenser and run a hot water cycle without clothes.
After the cycle, wipe the inside of the drum with a damp cloth to remove any residue. For front-loaders, also clean the rubber door seal, which can trap mold and mildew. Pull back the seal and scrub it with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar, then dry it thoroughly.
- Use hot water for the cleaning cycle.
- For front-loaders, clean the door seal and filter.
- Leave the door open after cleaning to prevent mold.
Clean the Detergent Dispenser and Exterior
Remove the detergent dispenser drawer if possible and wash it with warm soapy water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any buildup. Wipe down the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth and a mild all-purpose cleaner. Don't forget the control panel and the area around the lid or door.
Maintenance Tips
To keep your washing machine fresh, run a cleaning cycle once a month. Use the right amount of detergent—too much can leave residue that promotes mold. After each use, leave the door or lid open to let the interior dry out. For front-loaders, check and clean the drain pump filter every few months.
- Clean monthly to prevent odors.
- Use HE detergent if your machine requires it.
- Wipe up spills promptly.
Common mistakes
- Using too much vinegar, which can damage rubber seals over time.
- Not cleaning the door seal on front-loaders, leading to mold.
- Closing the door immediately after use, trapping moisture.
